Although the tents for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week are still under construction, the fashion press and other fashionistas have arrived in New York to see what’s happening for Spring and Summer 2011. Aveda kicked off with one of the very first off site shows, sponsoring Organic by John Patrick. Lead stylist, Jenn Chiminiello, created “Wilted Waves”, a sophisticated long loose silhouette. Says designer John Patrick of the finish:

“The undone, wavy look is sexy and unrestrained, inspired by a girl’s hair after she’s been in the water. It’s very soft and flowing with lots of texture to give it a natural messiness. It’s loose, second-day hair—like it was curled the day before and then left alone. Our collection this season is based around water. I love that the hair look evokes the salty, windblown feel of hair that’s dried after being in the ocean. The style definitely has some 1970’s, Charlie’s Angels inspiration but the finished look is completely fresh.

In yoga, we’re all about creating freedom. Freedom from things like limitation, tension and lack, and the freedom to be who we need to be in order to feel alive, awake to our own potential, and of course, happy. On my off hours at the Omega’s Institute’s Being Yoga conference, I stumbled across Byron Katie’s intriguing book I Need Your Love– Is that True? It brings up valid questions about how much energy and time we waste trying to get other people to do what we want. I instantly saw the parallels to how and why we practice yoga.

The root of suffering, according to so many spiritual traditions, including yoga, is seeking fulfillment from outside sources. We know this, yet we still do it all the time. “You’re late again!” we fume at our partners, while sitting at a restaurant with friends. “I hate it when you disrespect my time like that!”

But hold on there, yogis. You were at a nice restaurant with friends. Why not want your partner to get there when its organically right for them, and in the meantime, isn’t there wonderful conversation to be had with your tablemates, precious time for the three of you to create your own special dynamic, or even a wine list to peruse and discuss with the sommelier? Which truth creates more harmony, increased life affirmation, and allows love to flourish? And which creates a diminishing, negative space?

In the part of our yoga practice that includes a sticky mat and poses, we quickly learn that truth is relative. When in a long-held Plank, Pose we can choose this one:
“I can’t do this–my arms are going to give out!” Or this one: “Wow! I’m getting super strong right now, even though my arms feel like they’re going to give out!” Or a million alternatives that may or may not serve our ultimate goals the best. And that’s the key to happiness.

When you’re engaged in a lifestyle of awareness and health, your main goal is not to make other people keep you stable and loved. It’s for you to be stable and loved, from the inside out, all by yourself. Otherwise, you’re leaving your inner state up to the wild and unpredictable world of others. And no matter how much they want to be there for you, they cannot be you. Knowing this ignites your inner strength and potential to reclaim the power you hold to self-generate satisfaction right here, right now.

Only you can ensure that you turn all moments to your advantage, and that you see the love and unity inherent in every situation, instead of the separatism and doubt, and move into your best life even so. Am I telling you to put up with abuse? Of course not. In Warrior I, you should get some kind of growth and transformation, and then you move on, before you overdo it and end up tearing yourself down. When you really look at what you do in yoga classes, meditations, and other spiritual disciplines you’re engaged in, you’ll see they are sending you direct messages about the road out of suffering. Whether you take it or not has nothing to do with anyone else–and everything to do with you.

Here’s a pose I teach my students to help them engage in the practice of what comedian Stephen Colbert calls “truthiness.” In other words, see how you can shift your perspective into something that lights you up and keeps your heart wide open, instead of the opposite.

Core Pose: Side Angle Preparation

Sure, you might be able to get your hand to the floor or block here, but that’s not the point of this posture. I invite you to back off to go deeper. The practice is to bring yourself out of full external expression and hug into your inner world.

Come into a Warrior stance with your right foot forward and back foot angled slightly forward. Heels either intersect on an imaginary line or step wider to hip distance. Place your right forearm on your right thigh and sweep your left arm over the ear. Widen both shoulders and maintain the downward ground of your forearm. Breathe slowly and deeply through the nose.

Root your heels and balls of the feet deeply into the mat to create a corresponding lift and support through the legs. As the fierce intensity builds in your legs, your dedication may begin to waver as your mind begins to give you all sorts of excuses encouraging you to bail.

Instead, breathe more deeply. See if you can shift your focus to something empowering, like maintaining the engagement of your low belly, building core strength as your tailbone lengthens, promoting space in the sacrum and lower back. Spin from your lower ribcage and offer your heart to your highest self, even though you’re enduring a lot of sensation. This is the same as any high emotional state that threatens to knock you off center. This is your practice of staying your ground.

Most of all, enjoy feeling yourself transform. It’s not always comfortable, but it can be powerful–depending how you look at it.

Deb Gavin:

“Simply put, most stylists never educate their male clients on their color options,” says Deb Gavin, Goldwell’s North American Guest Artist and owner of Fresh Hair Studio in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “Men tend to be afraid to ask their stylist about hair color so we just assume they would not be interested. However, there are three leading concerns men have with regards to hair color:”

“The first is, ‘How will my hair look when it grows out?’ I share with them that there are many options and we can create a natural out growth by using the right tool, so they won’t have a heavy line of demarcation. They also ask, ‘Will it look natural?’ I tell them, absolutely, through proper formulation, like taking all or some of the ‘N’ out of your formula, you can create a more slate-based color. They also ask, ‘How long will I have to sit in the salon?’ With products like Goldwell Men ReShade, the color service can be done at the shampoo bowl in as little as five minutes. With Goldwell’s Hybrid Foam Technology it looks more like shampoo then hair color.

“To enhance the male client experience, create an area that caters more toward them. Things like magazines geared toward what they like to read help. Men need to compete and stand out more then ever. The days of a power suit getting you by are gone. It’s about having signature hair color and a more youthful look.”

Aura Friedman:

“There are several ways to introduce men to the wonderful world of hair color,” says Aura Friedman, celebrity colorist for Wella Professionals. “Although women enjoy a distinguished look, everybody—male or female— wants to look and feel youthful.”

“With men the most important thing is to look natural. There are a few ways to achieve that. One way is to leave the gray temples out and to start the color right behind them. The gray temple looks distinguished and camouflages color re-growth, allowing more time in between color processes. Short men’s cuts can be tricky when it comes to coloring due to the fact they need more frequent touch ups. Keeping some well-placed grays in the hair can give a man’s hair color longevity.

“Another natural way to blend away grays is painting in darker pieces. The best type of color to use for this process is a new Koleston Perfect color called Pure Naturals. It’s great when coloring men’s hair because their grays tend to be coarse and pull warm tones. “Another option is to use a demi-permanent color, such as Wella Professionals Color Touch. Color Touch is a non-ammonia, deposit-only color when used with the 1.9 percent (6 volume peroxide). It is best to apply the color starting at the nape, which will make the hairline appear lighter and softer — emulating nature. This works well on men because it avoids any lift in the natural color and the translucency assures gray blending. My goal when coloring male clients is to avoid an unnatural opaque or “shoe-polish” finish. The key to successfully introducing men to color is to be thoughtful with your color placement, considering their ability to maintain the color while keeping it as natural as possible.”

Need to brush up on your perm terminology? Here’s a quick guide to the lingo.

Root Perm: The root perm adds volume at the root of the hair to give lots of body. It’s also perfect for already permed hair that’s looking for a little pick-me-up. Because only the roots are treated, it saves the rest of the locks from another treatment.

Body Wave Perm: Creating big, bouncy curls, the body wave is for curl lovers who want a more modern look. Because this perm uses larger perm rods than traditional perms, the length of your client’s hair will determine how curly it will be: the shorter, the curlier.

Weave Perm: Because you’re curling only partial sections of the hair, the weave perm will give your client a fusion look with both textured and straight pieces in her hair.

Stack Perm: The stack perm is made for women who have a one-length cut. The treatment creates soft, layered curls for a natural look and is achieved by the use of differently sized rollers to the middle and bottom sections of the hair. The top is typically left fl at to look more natural.

Acid Perm: While it sounds harsh, the acid perm is actually gentler than the traditional alkaline perm as it has a lower pH level. It is specifically made for those with sensitive, fragile, or damaged hair.

Exothermic Perm: Referring to the gentle, internal heat that is characteristic of this treatment, the exothermic perm speeds up the processing time. The heat allows the lotion to absorb quickly into the hair, conditioning and strengthening the cuticle from the inside.

According to Darby Shields, associate artistic director for ISO, there are two four-letter words in hairdressing: bang and perm. When it comes to perms “We now say ‘body’ or ‘movement’ or ‘texture,’” explains Shields. Whatever you choose to call them—texturizers, waves or perms—the technology has come a long way.

Accommodating the Curl Craze

Demand is on the rise as texture has become increasingly fashionable. The whole process of creating curl has changed dramatically from the days of strong chemicals, perm rods and end papers. In 1938, Arnold F. Willatt invented the cold wave. It used no machines and no heat. Hair was wrapped on rods and a reduction lotion containing ammonium thioglycolate was applied, breaking open the disulfide linkages between the polypeptide bonds in the keratin (the protein structure) in the hair. The disulfide bonds give hair its elasticity, and can be reformed with chemicals. Next, an oxidation lotion was applied, (hydrogen peroxide), to close the disulfide bridges again and the hair was reformed to the shape of the rod. The entire process took six to eight hours at room temperature.

A Kinder, Gentler Perm
The new generation of perms are much gentler, with lower pH and low ammonia. ISO’s Option Wave, for example, is completely free of thio, the activator found in many traditional perms, and also has a damagefree, low-ammonia formulation. The application also has changed dramatically from perm rods and end papers. Today’s tools are flexible and soft or no tools at all. “You can make pin curls and process that, if you want,” Shields says. “You can do just about anything you want.” “There is so much variety now, and that carries over to the textural spectrum,” says Steve Goddard, president and founder of Pravana Naturceuticals, the company that created the Beach Wave. “It’s not just about different cuts today. It’s about different textures.

Jon Gonzales, the president and founder of Hairdresser Career Development Systems provided MODERN with some common Hairdresser Mistakes to Avoid. Here’s some of his advice:

Crossing Off On Your Appointment Book: Do not cross off time on your appointment book and limit your availability for customers. Create a structured work schedule for yourself and stay in your salon. You never know when a client may drop in for a last minute appointment.

Not Asking For Feedback: This can hinder your ability to reach your highest potential. Use constructive criticism as an invitation to perfect your skills, let your clients know you appreciate their opinions and views.

Looking Unprofessional: You’re in the business of making others feel good and look good. From the viewpoint of your customers, if you look good, you will know how to make them look good too.

Handling Customer Procedures Poorly: Greet your customer, smile, and make a positive impression if they are a newbie. Use your communication and people skills to really make your personality shine.

Many people have hair extensions and need to learn how to take care of hair extensions. In this posting, we go over Hair Extensions Care. Taking Care of hair extensions is very important. You spent a lot of money on extensions, so we want to make sure you know how to take care of them!

Hair Extensions Care depends on what type of extensions you have. Lets go over the various care tips for the different extension types.

Fusion Hair Extensions – To take care of fusion hair extensions, make sure you brush your hair on a regular basis. Avoid conditioner on your hair bonds. Wash the scalp on a regular basis, do not let the bonds get oily. Visit the salon on a regular basis, to check the hair bondings, and put back any pieces that fall out. Do not use cheap shampoo like Pantene, this can ruin your extensions. Do not over pull when you brush. Make sure you use a hair extensions brush!

Micro Link Hair Extensions Care - To take care of Micro Link based extensions such as Remylinks, you need to remember that the links are not permanent to your hair, so you need to be more gentle than when dealing with Fusion extensions. Avoid making the hair and scalp oily. Oil can ruin your extensions, so a great deal of effort must be made to keep hair clean. Brush with hair extensions brush and use hair extensions shampoos.

If you are attending an event or special occasion, it will be important to find the salon and stylist that can give you the look you want to achieve for your events. Finding a great salon will be easy if you follow some steps to identify the perfect choice for you.

A person who has worn their hair in the same style for several years, and worked with the same salon and stylist, may find it difficult to find a salon and stylist they feel comfortable with. An easy way to solve this problem is to watch the people around you closely and pay attention to their hairstyles.

When you see someone in a mall, hotel, restaurant, or elsewhere, who has a style that closely resembles your own, spend a moment talking to them. Ask the person about their stylist and salon. Most people will be very willing to discuss their hair, salon, and stylist with you.

Once you have got the names and locations of some salons, visiting them will be an important step. You will want to see how the atmosphere in the salon is reflected among the stylists, staff, and customers. An individual who has gone to the same salon for several years will feel much more comfortable if they are in a salon that has the same type of friendly atmosphere they have known and their home salon.

If you are attending an event where he stylist is going to be in attendance, meeting the stylist prior to having your hair done will be important. In many cases the stylist will be able to give you a reference to their salon if they feel your hair will require special attention. This will help you to ensure your hair looks its best for the event.

Having the hairstyle that you are comfortable with we all make your visit, event, or occasion much more enjoyable if you stand a little time finding the right salon and stylist. In addition, you will not need to feel self-conscious about photos or being seen at the event.

The best salons Scottsdale has often are very well known and have a reputation for providing the kinds of services that customers appreciate. Finding salons that are located near your proximity will help you to avoid the need to rent a car or drive to an unknown location. Therefore, finding out where the best salons near your location are at will be beneficial.
