Balayage is a French freestyle technique of creating natural, hand-painted highlights to help achieve a natural and relaxed look. Our stylists have become experts at the Balayage Technique, referred to as “sweeping” because we use a sweeping motion when we apply the color with our color applicator. Balayage is less time-consuming than getting a full head of traditional highlights. The traditional highlighting technique uses aluminum foil to break up the hair color, often leaving hard lines and extreme color contrast. The Balayage technique can be done in a chunky or subtle way, but the effect is generally softer since the highlights are more sparse than with the aluminum foil technique. Balayage is much easier to maintain since the roots will blend in with the rest of your hair as they grow in.

When to choose to do Balayage over traditional foil highlights

1) When it’s a first time highlight client who is specifically asking for very subtle natural highlights on any shade hair.

2) If the client (male or female) has very short hair. Foils in this case may not be the answer, Balayage will give you the most natural, relaxed finish.

3) I have had clients come to me who were foiled and are asking for hair that is more maintainable. They feel that they are too blond. Sure, you can archive this with foils but highlighting and low lighting with the Balayage technique is the best way to get professional looking hair.

4) If a client has fine hair at the hairline, foiling can make it hard to get all of the hair evenly. Balayage makes it easy to get these fine hairs.

Try this innovative highlighting technique! Schedule your appointment today, call Fate Image Studio at 480-990-3283 and get pampered!!

Imagine a world free of knots and matted hair. Now close your eyes and picture yourself having the ability to run your comb through your client’s hair and it being free of snags, tugs and tears. Sounds pretty amazing, huh? This could be your reality if you follow these 7 tips and tricks from Master Hair Reconstructor Jeanene Barrett. She’s been a celebrity hairstylist for 10 years whose work can be seen on the runways at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and has applied her innovative de-knotting technique to some of Hollywood’s coveted celebrities.

1. Know the Facts – Did you know that unexpected hair loss and balding can be triggered early due to incidents with unsympathetically matted and tangled hair? Yup! Hair becomes matted when it is not getting combed as needed to permit natural shedding. Loose hair can knot several times around strands, creating tangles that cause the hair to matte. When the hair is damaged, the cuticle is lifted and not smooth thus making it difficult to slide and pass each other during the combing/brushing process.

2. De-Matte the Matte – When hair is matted beyond belief, saturate the area with a lubricant to make the cuticle smoother and easier for the strands to slide pass. Barrett recommends PhytoSpecific’s Revitalizing Treatment, Jane Carter’s Hair Nourishing Serum or Hot Six Oil for lubrication. Cover hair with a conditioning cap and apply heat for 30 minutes. Depending on the damage of the hair, Barrett recommends removing the hair from heat to allow the lubricant to soak in and work through the tangles. Remember, both you and your client will need to have a lot of patience while doing this so inform her it might take a while to tackle the tangles. Grab a stack of magazine for her to flip through so she doesn’t get anxious and impatient.

3. Snip Snip – To avoid hair from matting and knotting, you need to caution your clients much like Barrett does to prevent them from taking shortcuts and putting their hair risk. The most important thing is to encourage them to get the split ends cut off regularly. This is a great opportunity for you to get her to pre-book her next appointment. This also holds true for clients with hair extension. Even they need a good trim every now and then.

4. Tool School – Make sure you and your clients are using the proper tools required for their hair type. Straight hair may need brushing while loose curls may only require a “finger brushing.” Don’t assume your client knows what a “Mason Pearson” brush is when discussing the different types of brushes and combs available for proper haircare. Take one out of your drawer and show her. You’ll be surprised how many hairdressers assume their clients know what they are talking about. Just because they are nodding their head and saying “yes” doesn’t mean they completely get it.

5. Moisture Medic – Hair gets tangled and matted when it is dry and lacking proper moisture. Give it a good drink with hydrating shampoos and conditioners that will help it maintain moisture until its next trim. It’s important to find products that contain soy isoflavones that aid in strengthening hair and maintaining scalp integrity. Make sure you are informing your clients of this. Why? Your retail area will thank you immensely when you send her home with product on hand.

6. Product Push – Speaking of products, become familiar with some of the opportunities found within nature to keep surly strands in check. Jojoba oil’s structure resembles natural sebum oil produced by the scalp, and regular use of Jojoba oil makes hair more resistant to tangles, dryness and split ends while Shea Butter’s fatty acids help prevent brittleness. You can reach out to your distributors and manufacturer representatives to see what products containing these properties are available. PS – it is also important to stick to cream-based conditioner versus gel-based.

7. Proper Prep and Procedure – It’s all about how and when you tackle the tangles. Remember to brush hair thoroughly before washing to get any loose hairs or dirt out. To prevent knots, start combing the ends of the hair and slowly move up to the roots. To prevent tangling while blow drying, use a dryer with a wide-toothed attachment blowing straight down, one section at a time. Encouraging your client to sleep on a satin pillowcase or pulling her hair back before bed will also prevent tangles from occurring. Your client will be sans tears and all smiles when you share this information with her.

As women age, keeping hair healthy, shiny and strong can be a challenge. Turning gray and thinning hair are common problems, but overall brittle and dry hair can be problems too. External influences like blow drying, coloring, and over styling contribute to the lack of moisture in the hair, reducing luster.

According to Andrea Wentz, senior brand manager at Schwarzkopf Professional. “Human hair is composed of up to 95 percent keratins. Over time, two essential keratins are no longer fully produced and fewer components are available to define the hair structure, so the hair becomes weak and more fragile.”

To keep hair healthy and revitalized, clients should opt for leave-in conditioners, deep conditioners or hair masks to combat dryness.

Wentz recommends your clients try Schwarzkopf Professional’s BC Time Restore, which contains Q10 Plus Complex.

Andrea-Wentz

“Now with five percent more Q10, we are able to stimulate the hair roots in turn activating the production of the two keratins that subside overtime,” says Wentz.

“The combination of the Q10 and collagen in this technology help to counterbalance the effects of aging, and renew elasticity and strength to the hair.” Visit schwarzkopf-professional.com.

Hair trends come and go but there’s one look that’s never out of style—thick, lustrous, red carpet-worthy locks. Think you can’t give your clients hair like the hottest celebs in Hollywood? Think again. The most sought-after celebrity stylists use Great Lengths hair extensions to give their A-list clients fresh, ever-changing styles, and the celebrities recognized for their long gorgeous locks all use Great Lengths. Here’s a sneak peek behind each of their looks, straight from their hairdressers’ mouths.

The Celebrity: Julianne Hough
The Stylist: Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri
The Salon: Nine Zero One, West Hollywood, CA
“Julianne has used Great Lengths in the past,” says Riawna, “and we just applied Great Lengths for her upcoming role in aFoot Loose remake.” Nikki and Riawna say that Julianne’s natural haircolor is fairly light, so they wanted to take her away from her typical platinum, all-over blonde. “We wanted to give her something more beachy and natural, so we created a look that had more of a root, then faded out to lighter blonde at the ends,” says Nikki. “We colored the extensions to match her color at the roots and made sure to leave enough of her hair out around her face and hairline so when she’s dancing, she can flip her hair all around and nobody will see any bonds.”

The Celebrity: Kristin Chenoweth
The Stylist: Kristina Barricelli
The Salon: Gemini 14 Salon, New York City
“Kristin has been wearing hair extensions for 10 year and has tried virtually every high-end brand,” says Kristina. “She loves Great Lengths and the application I provide for her. In fact, she has expressed to me that she will never try anything else. She is finally fulfilled with her hair and has found everything that she has been looking for with Great Lengths.” Kristina’s work can be seen on the cover of Time Out NY magazine, where Kristin was photographed with actor Sean Hayes. To create her multi-dimensional blonde look, Kristina used custom-blended extensions. “I color match her, then send a request to Great Lengths, and they ensure that I receive the perfect match every time.” Kristina applies nearly five bundles of the custom-colored hair using a hot fusion technique. “I think it’s the best option for natural blondes,” she adds. “With Great Lengths, my clients are not prisoners of continuing with hair extensions if they chose not to be,” says Kristina. “The hair grows out healthy and stays intact. I like to be able to look my clients in the eye and guarantee them a damage-free service. Great Lengths hair gives me the confidence to do that.”
The Stylist: Marc Mena
The Salon: Warren Tricomi Salon, New York City
“Janice usually wears clip-in extensions but she’s become obsessed with Great Lengths,” says Marc, who uses extensions to give his client fuller, longer, healthier looking hair. “She does a lot of TV appearances, so I like to make sure she goes on-camera looking great,” he adds, stating that sometimes women in their fifties–like Janice–can become insecure about using extensions. But I tell them it’s like Botox for the hair! It’s not too drastic and gives just the right amount of oomph to make their hair look healthy, youthful and amazing.” Janice colors her hair, so to ensure everything matched, Marc deepend Janice’s haircolor then colored the extensions to match. Using a cold fusion method, Marc gave Janice a full head of extensions in under two hours! “I kind of pride myself on my speed,” he says. “The Great Lengths application methods allow me to work quickly.” A definite plus when working with busy celebrity clients.
The Stylist: Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri
The Salon: Nine Zero One, West Hollywood, CA
“Christina has been our client for about a year and she likes to change her hair often,” say co-owners Nikki and Riawna. “She cut her hair really short, to just above her chin, then started to grow it out. After a little while, she was ready for extensions!” So Christina went to the salon and the ladies gave her a full head of Great Lengths. “And now she’s obsessed!” Nikki and Riawna had to create a longer look for Christina’s role in an upcoming film, so they gave her a long, straight style. “A lot of the time, we can only do what the hair will allow us, and since Christina’s hair was shorter to begin with, we created a style for her that would look the most natural,” says Riawna. Then, when Christina is ready to change her look for her next role, Nikki and Riawna can easily remove the extensions without damage. “We love Great Lengths because of the amazing, healthy results,” they say. “Great Lengths literally do not do any damage to the hair at all, and that why our celebrity clients love them so much!”

There is six main styles for Autumn/Winter 2010, which range from 18th century texture to 90’s inspired grunge,

3. Next up is the blow dry or blowout as some people call it, which is glossy hair blown into full bodied volumed hair.

4. Fringes are all in this season but instead of side sweeping fringes its full straight fringes that are the key trend,

5. Ponytails are also big again this season, you will need to straighten your hair and use serum to create a really sleek ponytail, and then wrap a piece of your own hair or a extension piece around the pony tail and fix in place using a grip.

6. Also volumized hair with a messy plait down one side is very fashionable at the moment, see pictures to get a idea on how it should look.

COLOUR TRENDS

For natural brunettes or red heads try using richer tones of highlights and low-lights, red heads should ask their stylist for velvet shades, burgundy hues and rich coppers, and brunettes should ask for a combination of colours to add some depth like, leather browns, hazelnut tones, and midnight black.

Natural blonde’s or light brown haired woman should ask for a nutty earthy undertone to add depth, ask for a buttery blond colour. and for Natural or bleached blonde’s ask for pastelling which is great for adding depth to fair hair, stay in style with a infusion of different tones like

Deb Gavin:

“Simply put, most stylists never educate their male clients on their color options,” says Deb Gavin, Goldwell’s North American Guest Artist and owner of Fresh Hair Studio in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “Men tend to be afraid to ask their stylist about hair color so we just assume they would not be interested. However, there are three leading concerns men have with regards to hair color:”

“The first is, ‘How will my hair look when it grows out?’ I share with them that there are many options and we can create a natural out growth by using the right tool, so they won’t have a heavy line of demarcation. They also ask, ‘Will it look natural?’ I tell them, absolutely, through proper formulation, like taking all or some of the ‘N’ out of your formula, you can create a more slate-based color. They also ask, ‘How long will I have to sit in the salon?’ With products like Goldwell Men ReShade, the color service can be done at the shampoo bowl in as little as five minutes. With Goldwell’s Hybrid Foam Technology it looks more like shampoo then hair color.

“To enhance the male client experience, create an area that caters more toward them. Things like magazines geared toward what they like to read help. Men need to compete and stand out more then ever. The days of a power suit getting you by are gone. It’s about having signature hair color and a more youthful look.”

Aura Friedman:

“There are several ways to introduce men to the wonderful world of hair color,” says Aura Friedman, celebrity colorist for Wella Professionals. “Although women enjoy a distinguished look, everybody—male or female— wants to look and feel youthful.”

“With men the most important thing is to look natural. There are a few ways to achieve that. One way is to leave the gray temples out and to start the color right behind them. The gray temple looks distinguished and camouflages color re-growth, allowing more time in between color processes. Short men’s cuts can be tricky when it comes to coloring due to the fact they need more frequent touch ups. Keeping some well-placed grays in the hair can give a man’s hair color longevity.

“Another natural way to blend away grays is painting in darker pieces. The best type of color to use for this process is a new Koleston Perfect color called Pure Naturals. It’s great when coloring men’s hair because their grays tend to be coarse and pull warm tones. “Another option is to use a demi-permanent color, such as Wella Professionals Color Touch. Color Touch is a non-ammonia, deposit-only color when used with the 1.9 percent (6 volume peroxide). It is best to apply the color starting at the nape, which will make the hairline appear lighter and softer — emulating nature. This works well on men because it avoids any lift in the natural color and the translucency assures gray blending. My goal when coloring male clients is to avoid an unnatural opaque or “shoe-polish” finish. The key to successfully introducing men to color is to be thoughtful with your color placement, considering their ability to maintain the color while keeping it as natural as possible.”

Need to brush up on your perm terminology? Here’s a quick guide to the lingo.

Root Perm: The root perm adds volume at the root of the hair to give lots of body. It’s also perfect for already permed hair that’s looking for a little pick-me-up. Because only the roots are treated, it saves the rest of the locks from another treatment.

Body Wave Perm: Creating big, bouncy curls, the body wave is for curl lovers who want a more modern look. Because this perm uses larger perm rods than traditional perms, the length of your client’s hair will determine how curly it will be: the shorter, the curlier.

Weave Perm: Because you’re curling only partial sections of the hair, the weave perm will give your client a fusion look with both textured and straight pieces in her hair.

Stack Perm: The stack perm is made for women who have a one-length cut. The treatment creates soft, layered curls for a natural look and is achieved by the use of differently sized rollers to the middle and bottom sections of the hair. The top is typically left fl at to look more natural.

Acid Perm: While it sounds harsh, the acid perm is actually gentler than the traditional alkaline perm as it has a lower pH level. It is specifically made for those with sensitive, fragile, or damaged hair.

Exothermic Perm: Referring to the gentle, internal heat that is characteristic of this treatment, the exothermic perm speeds up the processing time. The heat allows the lotion to absorb quickly into the hair, conditioning and strengthening the cuticle from the inside.
