Cancer can rob women of so much—their strength, their confidence, their beauty. One element of care that’s often overlooked in cancer patients is their skin. Chemical and radiation treatments that attack the disease can also destroy patients’ healthy elasticity and skin tone.

One Columbus, Ohio-based doctor and ovarian cancer survivor wants women (and men) to know that they don’t have to live with all the side effects from cancer treatment that affect their appearance. As a skin care professional, you might consider creating a menu designed specifically for cancer patients, whose regime changes dramatically during such a difficult time. Not only could such tips help prevent premature aging of the skin, but more importantly, it could help an underserved client realize that he or she deserves special care.

Dr. Carol Clinton, founder of Timeless Skin Solutions (www.timelessskinsolutions.com) was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the same time she was opening her very own medical-based skin care practice. She was concerned about the reaction her patients might have to her ever-changing appearance—hair loss, scaly skin, etc. But instead of hiding behind masks and wearing wigs, Dr. Clinton embraced the changes and took control. She proudly showcased her cancer battle, and in return, she discovered things patients can do to feel beautiful. Now cancer-free, Clinton share tips on how to approach and care for skin care clients who are undergoing treatment for cancer:

*Recommend a cleanser that is gentle for the skin. Many treatments during illness can cause skin to become very sensitive, break out easily or develop rashes. Avoid performing harsher glycolic treatments on cancer patients. Also, strongly suggest that they wear a moisturizer with sunscreen.

*Encourage patients to schedule a facial every month. Perhaps you can partner with your local branch of the American Cancer Society to create a special monthly promotion designed to pamper those suffering from cancer. Explain to such patients that their skin will not turn over in its normal 28-day process, which will result in a sallow and tired look.

*Don’t neglect their scalp. When a cancer patient comes to you for a basic facial, suggest a scalp treatment, as well. This is especially important for men and women who have lost their hair in chemotherapy sessions and are covering their scalp with a wig most of the day. Microdermabrasion for the face and scalp would be an effective offering.

*Finally, if they wear makeup, be sure it’s mineral based. Invest in a good mineral-based cosmetic line. Zinc and copper are particularly soothing to the skin. Make the client feel beautiful and confident. Her skin tone has likely changed, so when she visits your spa, offer her a complimentary makeup application and lesson.

*Laser treatments, Botox and facial fillers are not out of the picture during treatment.Have clients first check with their physician to be sure that their particular medical state doesn’t prevent them from smoothing a few lines here and there. Giving them skin that looks healthy and vibrant will help them face some of the tougher days with a better outlook.

Eva Graham, founder of Nioxin, received the City of Hope’s 2010 Spirit of Life Award last night in Las Vegas during PBA Beauty Week. She recently spoke with News Editor Jan Hillenmeyer about what this honor means to her.

JH: Tell us a little about the City of Hope Spirit of Life Award and what it means to you.

EG: I’m truly honored and humbled and very thankful for this opportunity to collaborate with City of Hope. The Spirit of Life award is something I’ve always loved seeing my peers receive, but I actually never thought that one day I would be the recipient, so I am very excited. It’s been a joy to learn about all the incredible research and treatment techniques at City of Hope that are changing the lives of people experiencing cancer and many other life threatening illnesses.

Nioxin was all about helping people and, many times, it was people who were experiencing hair loss as a result of trauma or cancer treatments. It’s been very special time for me to support our campaign, which is Preserve Beauty and Inspire Hope.

JH: What treatment or research category have you designated as the recipient of your campaign?

EG: We’re helping fund research into a treatment for macular degeneration, which is a genetic eye disease that is also affected by environmental changes, some that are understood and some factors that are still unknown, but the disease is definitely on a serious increase. There is no current cure and without further research, patients with this disorder will eventually lose all their eyesight.

JH: The industry knows you as the founder of Nioxin and a pioneer in the field of thinning hair and hair loss. What lead you to develop this product category, which was very underserved at the time?

EG: I grew up in a family that experienced a lot of hair loss and after the birth of my first daughter, a huge amount of my hair fell out. I understand first hand how people feel when they lose large amounts of hair and can’t do anything about it. It became a lifetime goal for me to find the reasons and solutions to help men, women, and even children experiencing hair loss to keep the hair they still had and to make that hair as strong and healthy as possible.
This was challenging at the beginning because I remember stylists saying, “Oh, Eva, I can’t tell clients they are losing their hair,” and I would explain, “Your clients already know that. “

Who better to help people with hair loss than a trained salon professional? With that in mind, we created an educational program to help stylists and salon owners speak comfortably with clients about hair loss.

Men might dismiss hair loss as inevitable, but women are very quick to address their concerns and seek help.

JH: With you long and distinguished career in the professional salon industry, what aspects of the business have inspired and influenced your professional and personal life?

EG: I could probably talk all day about that, but one thing is certainly the relationships with my peers. I had wonderful friends in the industry, connections with so many people—distributors, manufacturers, and salon professionals—and, because Nioxin is in 42 countries, it opened a wonderful vista and arenas for learning about many cultures of the world.

I think something we can all relate to is how passionate our industry is about everything they do and I was always so impressed and inspired by how salon professionals want to help people and give them hope when, perhaps they didn’t have any. My 23 years at Nioxin were about helping people feel good about them selves and have a positive self-image. I’m very grateful to have had such a beautiful opportunity.

Korvue, developers of salon software for one-man operations up to multi-corporations, has added “native support” with the iPad to their software so it will communicate directly with the iPad. “What makes it unique is that the iPad interfaces to Korvue are definable based on the user’s needs,” says Alan Hayes, account executive for Korvue Cosmedic Division. “For example, if I want to consult a client on services and products, I can show them the details, pricing, customer feedback and even videos. If I am a manager, I can have access to all the stats, alerts and information I need. Korvue supports electronic forms and even credit card processing through the iPad.”

Some of the immediate uses with Korvue include electric forms, such as personal information and preferences like music, drink and gender preference of the technician. The iPad can accept and authorize the payment, and allow the client to sign in with the pad of their finger.

When operating Korvue salon software on the iPad, users can utilize the Electronic Menu, where clients can read about services, products and stream video. Imagine handing the client an iPad so they can view a video testimonial of the client giving commentary on a service. Users can add services and products to their existing or future appointments, as well as search for and book new appointments. Visit korvue.com for details.

Many people continue to frequent the same salon as their parents did. That may be out of habit, but it could be that they aren’t aware of the choices available to them. Hair salons range from simple, neighborhood “chop shops” to luxurious salons that pamper clients. The atmosphere at a salon can be a factor in attracting clients, as well as the services offered. Some salons have “family” rates, while others list extravagant pricing for their services and products.

Customers at a shop called “Minnie Lou’s Cute Cuts” might go for a quick shampoo, hair cut, and style, while partaking of a soda pop and some community gossip. Clients at a salon whose name includes words such as “belle” and “magnifique” are likely to be spending the better part of their day basking in soothing hair and skin treatments, while sipping champagne, and participating in gossip sessions.

The old time “beauty shops” services were basically limited to hair styling, manicures, and facials. Conversely, the modern, full-service salons offer a wide range of ambiance, treatments, and products.

Historically, people had to deal with the type and texture of hair that genetics provided. Now, there are potions, solutions, and processes that straighten or curl, texturize, color, and condition hair. There are even hair extensions that can change the appearance of hair. Many of these changes can be life-altering for people who have always hated their hair type.

Remarkable advances have also been made in skin care. Cleansers, toners, moisturizers, and lift products often minimize the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes. New makeup products are constantly being developed in order to cover and protect skin, in addition to enhancing beauty. In-depth training and even licensure is available for estheticians, who specialize in skin care and makeup. Certifications are awarded to other skin care specialists who learn about certain methods and products, but don’t achieve licensure.

Some salons offer spa packages that may include manicures, nail enhancements, pedicures, facials, permanent makeup, waxing, tanning, massage, aroma therapy, body wraps, couple’s suite, or tattoo removal.

If they are very fortunate, frazzled parents can schedule an hour or two of relaxation and beauty while their children are cared for by licensed day care professionals. Some salon owners even specialize in doing children’s hairstyles, catering to their special needs and whims.

Hair salon Scottsdale and other salons of today are worlds apart from the shops of yesterday. Most people have to spend time and money to receive services by professional stylists and skin care specialists. Choosing the salon that “fits” may take a little research and planning, but can be well worth the effort. Salons offer a variety of goods and services, as well as prices and ambiance. Most salons have websites that offer information that will help guide the selection for a pleasant outcome.

This year the North American Hairstyling Awards celebrates business success with a new competition category—the Salon Master of Business Award. Designed to allow business-savvy owners to show off their labors of love, the Salon MBA Award encourages owners to submit information on their salon’s demographics, existing and new business strategies, retail promotions and sales, marketing and community service strategies, and current financial and future plans.

“With the Salon MBA, we are able to recognize not just a salon owner, but a true businessperson and all the efforts in creating a successful business,” says Bonnie Bonadeo, PBA’s director of program development and education.

This year’s nominees are: Shawn Trujillo and Angie Katsavenvas, owners of Lunatic Fringe in Salt Lake City, Utah; Karie and Aaron Bennett, owners of Atelier Aveda Salonspa in San Jose, California; Tina Morschauser and Gretchen Brown, owners of the Rejuvenation Spa in Madison, Wisconsin; Kendall Ong and Beate Assmuth-Ong, owners of Mane Attraction in Phoenix, Arizona; Debra and Charles Penzone, owner of The Charles Penzone Family of Salons in Columbus, Ohio.

Modern Salon caught up with a few of these nominees and asked their thoughts:

On the application process…
NAHA honors salon business ownersThe Bennetts: “It was a wonderful education in itself. During the entire process, we put a microscope on every aspect of the business and was already brainstorming improvements. What a wonderful gift to be nominated in this new category, among such amazing colleagues.”

On NAHA honoring business… The Ongs: “We think it is wonderful that NAHA is going beyond the artistry that goes into creating beautiful hair, because to run a beautiful business, you need to have creativity and artistry as well.”

THE DETAILS: Twenty-four editors from 13 countries were invited to this one-day event to meet with Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professional global creative director care and styling, and Josh Wood, global creative director of color, to see how their shape and color designs have impacted the fashion world. After a fashion show and presentation, the group was taken to the Wella Headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, to meet the chemists and scientists and see the labs where color is formulated and tested. In this “scientists’ playground” editors were treated to slide shows of cross sections of hair both before, during and after coloring services, and learned of color formulations from the creators themselves. In the technical center, the group met many of the colorists and clients working with new shades from semi to permanent.

CREATIVE SIDE: Souleiman created looks for 31 shows throughout the United States and Europe for the fall/winter 2010 collections, and has been found backstage at all major fashion shows since picking up his brush as a teenager. The Wood’s designs have impacted color statements in advertisements and on runways for years. Together, the duo has created breathtaking looks seen on red carpets on their celebrity clientele.

THE LAST WORD: Kevin Otera, vice president, global operations, P&G Salon Professional, met with the international editors. “At Salon Professional we pride ourselves on bringing meaningful innovation to our business partners to help them be the most successful in the industry. We constantly strive to ensure that we provide best-in-class support to our stylists by investing in education and training combined with our innovative and future-focused approach. However, instead of just talking about our brands, we want you to really get to know them so we decided to open our doors and invite you inside to an exclusive look behind the scenes.”

It’s the main attraction at holiday meals, it’s the star at summer barbecues and, for many, it’s on the menu most days of the week. But for years research has shown that eating a lot of meat—red meat, in particular—may lead to heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Most recently, a National Cancer Institute study that followed 500,000 middle-age and elderly people over 10 years found that those who ate 4 ounces (114 grams) of red meat or more daily were 30 percent more likely to die of any cause than were those who consumed less. Sausage, luncheon meats and other processed meats also increased risk. Those who ate mostly poultry had a lower risk of death.

That’s not to say that you should run out right now and become a vegetarian. Certainly, vegetarianism is a healthy lifestyle, but simply eating less meat can provide a protective effect. So why not try going meatless once or twice a week for starters? Here are few yummy ways to get protein in your diet without eating meat:

1. Black beans and rice
A four-ounce serving of 95% extra lean ground beef, broiled, has nearly 90mg of cholesterol, 7.5 grams of fat and no fiber. On the other hand, a four-ounce serving of black beans and rice together form a complete protein with no cholesterol, less than two grams of fat and is rich in fiber. Wrap them up in a burrito or taco, add them on top of a salad, or have them in soup or chili for a satisfying, filling meal.

2. Lentils
One of the world’s healthiest foods, a half cup of lentils contains only 115 calories, less than half a gram of fat, 9 grams of protein, and 9 grams of fiber (a similar portion of baked chicken breast adds fat, 70 grams of cholesterol and none of the fiber). Include lentils in soups or pasta salad or try as a meat substitute in Italian dishes such as lasagna, spaghetti sauce or stuffed shells. But just like black beans, they need to be combined with some kind of whole grain to form a complete protein.

3. Tofu
This versatile protein can be used in place of chicken in almost any recipe and, again, contains none of the cholesterol. Soft tofu can be scrambled like eggs or used in soups (like miso). Firm tofu is great in stir-fry dishes or crumbled on top of salads.

4. Tuna
The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week. Some great choices include salmon, trout, herring, and tuna. These types of fish contain as much protein as similarly sized portion of red meat but also provide omega-3 fatty acids, which research has shown to lower risk of coronary artery disease.

5. Cottage Cheese
Cheese, like all milk-based products, are great sources of protein but are also typically high in fat. But low-fat cottage cheese (2%) is a smart choice. Top it with fruit for a healthy breakfast, eat it for a mid-afternoon snack, or have it with a salad for lunch or dinner.
When your meals include meat, just don’t overdo it. A serving of protein should be no more than three ounces (about the size of a deck of cards) and should take up no more than a fourth of your dinner plate. Vegetables and fruits should cover half your plate, with whole grains filling in the rest.
